Here’s 10 ways to quit smoking that don’t work
When my friends first started trying to quit smoking, they tried the obvious aversion and repression techniques – the ways to quit smoking that everybody seems to go through when they first start. Needless to say, both these approaches failed, which is why these smokers ended up on my course. I should add that both friends learned natural ways to quit smoking and have now stopped and have not smoked since. Their success this time was the result of learning a completely different attitude towards their desire to smoke.
A more serious problem with repression (or any of the other 10 ways to quit smoking) can be understood when you realize that the desire to smoke is an energy, a physical force not unlike emotions such as anger and grief. It is now widely accepted that chronic repression of emotions leads to physical upsets of all kinds. With stopping smoking, the effect of repressing your desire to smoke can surface in symptoms such as excess hunger, tension, loss of sleep, poor concentration and taking up other compulsive behaviors, such as shopping.
